A Clinical Review of the Acute Appendicitis


Abstract
This report is a clinical review of 436 cases of acute appendicitis which were operated and confirmed pathohistologically in the Dept. of Surgery, Korea University hospital from January 1973 to December 1977.
The following results were obtained:
1. In 130 out of 436 cases, perforated appendicitis (29.8%) were confirmed pathologically.
2. In the sex distribution, male to female ratio was 1.15:1 and the age distribution indicated predominant incidence in 1st (28.21/6) and 2nd decade (27.3%).
3. The highest incidence by season was in May (14.6%), but it was not significant.
4. The highest incidence of perforated appendicitis was under 10 years of age (50%), and followed by 6th decade (44%).
5. one hundred and eight cases (35.3%) of the acute nonperforated appendicitis were admitted to the hospital within first 24 hours, after onset of acute appendicitis and 17 cases (13%) of perforated appendicitis admitted in the same interval after onset.
6. The leucocytosis (over 10, 0001mm3) was observed in 75.5% of patients but no significant correlated between acute nonperferated and perferated appendicitis observed.
7. The RockeyDavis skin incisions was made in 306 cases (70.2x6) and McBurney skin incisions was made in 123 cases (28.2%).
8. Time needed for appendectomy was within 60 min. in 208 cases (68.0%) of acute nonperforated appendicitis.
9. The average lengh of reserted appendix, the length was from 5.4 cm to 7.4cm (mean 6.5 cm), and showed to be short by age.
10. The average duration of hopitalization was 7 days in 266 cases (87.0%) of the nonperforated appendicitis and in 80 cases (61.5%) of the perforated appendicitis.
